From then on, Enora visited every day.

Sometimes, they studied. Other times, they explored the Archives. From time to time, she even helped Castien with his work. They fell into an easy rhythm, and seeing Castien became the highlight of Enora’s day.

Today, she was in her family’s wing in the financial records section.

When Castien found her, she was sitting with several large, leatherback books in front of her. They were lined and filled with numbers.

“Math homework?” he asked, taking the chair next to her.

Her ears tinged red. “Not exactly. It’s the ledgers actually. For the Archives.”

“And how are we doing this fiscal year?” he asked with a smile, tucking a curl behind her ear.

The feel of his fingers brushing against her cheek sent a tingle down her spine. She smiled. “Not very well. This Preservation Squad is a huge expense, and the line items are exceptionally sparse. I would have expected much greater detail.” She frowned, and a little crease appeared between her eyes. “Someone has been shirking their fiduciary duties.”

He chuckled.

She blushed and changed the subject. “I thought we were meeting in the Intergalactic Ward today.”

He grinned sheepishly. “I didn’t want to wait.”

She eyed him suspiciously. “But how did you find me?” No matter where she sat, he always found her. It was uncanny.

Then, a mad thought hit her, and before she could stop herself, she blurted out, “Do you have the Rockwell gift? Can you see the future?” She started to laugh at herself for even suggesting something so silly but stopped at Castien’s expression.

He was frozen, and a look of panic crossed his features. “Why would you ask me that?”

Could it really be true? She considered all the strange coincidences that had happened since she met him. “Well, that day in the Arkwright Wing, you ran in before the books started flying off the shelves. Another day, you stayed after your shift because you thought I might visit, even though I hadn’t been here in a week. And today, you knew exactly where to find me. You always do.”

He let out a long sigh. “I’m such an idiot. I thought I was being careful.”

She cocked her head to the side. “I don’t understand. The gift is revered. Why would you hide it?”

“My bloodlines aren’t 100% royal. Having the gift would make a lot of people uneasy. Besides, the Rockwells are content to ignore my existence. I like it that way.”

She gave him a half smile. “That I can understand. It must be nice not to have the weight of their expectations on you.”

He seemed to understand the meaning behind her words. Sometimes, she didn’t want to be a Jacobs. Sometimes, she just wanted to be Enora— a seventeen-year-old girl who had hopes and dreams like anyone else.

No one had ever looked at her like this, like they understood her. Not even her own parents. Feeling a little exposed, Enora shifted the subject away from their families, “It must be wonderful to see the future.”

He frowned. “Not really.
